  1. One unintentional effect of the video was to challenge me to examine my own life and to look at to what extent I have been “joking around.”

Reading Fr. Michael Pomazansky’s Orthodox Dogmatic Theology translated by Father Seraphim Rose…

BTW, Reader Joseph’s response could perhaps be termed definitive.

  2. Very harsh words (tourists misbehaving…)
    I can’t say that I disagree though.

The video clip was atrocious on so many levels.

On a more positive note I happened to read this entry by Reader Joseph:

I must agree that I usually agree with most of what Reader Joseph says, but not always the manner in which he says it. This, is spot on and VERY well done.

  3. They are like tourists who feel free to misbehave in a land that is really not their home.

  4. Yeah. Maybe rampant flippancy and a tongue-in-cheekyness should have been on the survey. It’s certainly typical of the histrionically religious. You know, it’s really not necessary to hurl projectiles of invective over the Antiochians’ fence, WR or ER; if you leave them to themselves for a little while, it’s Lord of the Flies over there, and they just show it off for you.

  5. After briefly listening to this poorly executed salute to poor judgement and irreverence wherein even the words of Scripture are fair game for those who appear to be those voted “Most Unpopular Kids” by their high school class, I recall the repetitive, mechanical joking I experienced once in an AOA ER parish while the antidiron was offered to those leaving the Liturgy, and I recall as well the crumbs scattered all over the red carpeting, so much so that the floor looked like that of a movie cinema when the lights come up.

If one wants to additionally cringe, consider the time and intentionality that went into producing this song and video.
Cringe again with Ben Johnson’s “decision” to post it.

The notion that this video verges on “tongue in cheek” whether intended or not further boosts the cringe factor. An attempt to be “relevant?” Let me say this: there is so much in American culture or any culture that can never be relevant, only a subject for repentance. Was this offered as a break from all our “seriousness?” If so, it was a depressing break.

The notion that the “disaffected” have so much to offer Holy Orthodoxy is not supported by this video. The church needs true men in the clergy, not media-infested, self-willed, self-perpetuating nerds.

This type of clerical irreverence is demographically popular, guess where? In the Roman Catholic Church, where giddy “priesty” giggling abounds among seminarians, and yes, for years later into priesthood.

I had to shut it off, not because I am a good man and obviously not much of a kind man, but a miserable sinner.

NO ONE’s conversion should be taken lightly, especially not our own conversions.
